Char Dham Yatra from Jharkhand by Bus — Complete Travel Guide
Char Dham Yatra is considered one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Hinduism, covering four holy shrines in the Himalayas — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Every year, thousands of devotees from Jharkhand undertake this journey, and travelling as a group by bus is by far the most comfortable, economical, and spiritually cohesive way to do it.
This guide covers everything you need to know to plan your Char Dham Yatra from Ranchi or any city in Jharkhand.
The four dhams — what to expect at each
**Yamunotri** is the westernmost and typically the first dham visited. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and is located at an altitude of 3,293 metres. The trek from Janki Chatti to the temple is 6 km each way. Pilgrims cook rice and potatoes in the hot springs near the temple — this prasad is considered especially sacred.
**Gangotri** is the origin of the River Ganga (though the actual glacial source, Gaumukh, is 18 km further). The temple sits at 3,048 metres and is one of the most serene pilgrimage sites in the Himalayas. The town of Gangotri is small but well-equipped for pilgrims.
**Kedarnath** is the most challenging of the four dhams and also the most spiritually significant for many devotees. The shrine is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and sits at 3,583 metres. The trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is 16 km one way — pony, palki, and helicopter services are available. The temple is surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks.
**Badrinath** is the final dham and one of the most accessible — it sits on a motorable road at 3,133 metres. The Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India. The town has good accommodation options and the Tapt Kund hot spring near the temple is a must-visit.
Best time for Char Dham Yatra
The Char Dham temples open in April or May and close in October or November each year. The exact dates change annually based on the Hindu calendar.
**May to June** is the most popular period. The weather is pleasant, the roads are clear, and all four shrines are accessible. This is also the busiest time, so book your bus and accommodation well in advance.
**September to October** is the second-best window. The monsoon crowds have thinned, the landscapes are lush green after the rains, and temperatures are still manageable. Many pilgrims prefer this time for a more peaceful experience.
**July to August (monsoon)** is risky. Landslides and road closures are common in the Himalayan region during this period. We do not recommend planning Char Dham travel during peak monsoon unless you are prepared for delays and detours.
Route from Jharkhand to Char Dham
The typical journey from Ranchi or any Jharkhand city to the Char Dham circuit goes like this:
**Day 1–2**: Ranchi to Haridwar by bus (approximately 1,200 km, 18–20 hours with overnight travel). Haridwar serves as the gateway to the Char Dham circuit and has excellent accommodation for large pilgrim groups.
**Day 3**: Haridwar to Barkot (for Yamunotri), approximately 220 km.
**Day 4**: Barkot — trek to Yamunotri and return.
**Day 5–6**: Barkot to Uttarkashi to Gangotri, then Gangotri darshan.
**Day 7–8**: Drive to Guptkashi or Sitapur (for Kedarnath), then trek or pony ride to Kedarnath.
**Day 9–10**: Kedarnath darshan, return to base, drive to Badrinath.
**Day 11–12**: Badrinath darshan, begin return journey.
**Day 13–15**: Return to Jharkhand.
A full Char Dham Yatra from Jharkhand typically takes 15–18 days depending on the pace and any rest days built in.
Why travel by group bus?
Travelling as a group by bus has several advantages over individual or mixed transport:
Your entire group stays together throughout the journey — no one gets separated, lost, or delayed. The social and spiritual energy of travelling with your community is a significant part of the pilgrimage experience.
It is considerably more economical. The per-head cost of a group bus from Jharkhand to Char Dham is much lower than individual train or flight travel plus local transport.
Our drivers are experienced on mountain roads. Himalayan terrain requires specific driving experience. Our drivers who handle pilgrimage routes are trained for these conditions.
You have flexibility. If your group wants an extra hour at Kedarnath or a detour to Mana village (the last Indian village before the Tibet border, near Badrinath), a private bus can accommodate that.
What to carry
- Valid government ID for every member (Aadhaar card preferred)
- Warm clothes — temperatures drop sharply at altitude, even in summer
- Rain poncho or light waterproof jacket
- Comfortable trekking shoes with good grip
- Personal medicines and a basic first aid kit
- Cash in small denominations — ATMs are sparse in mountain towns
- Dry snacks for the journey
