Digha Beach Trip from Jharkhand — Complete Group Travel Guide

Digha is the most popular beach destination for groups from Jharkhand — affordable, accessible, and offering a genuine seaside experience on the Bay of Bengal. Whether you are planning a corporate outing, a college trip, a family holiday, or a group getaway, Digha delivers a refreshing break from the landlocked landscape of Jharkhand. This guide covers everything you need to plan a perfect group trip to Digha by bus.

About Digha

Digha is a beach town in the Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal, located on the Bay of Bengal. The town has two main beach areas — Old Digha and New Digha — connected by a road running parallel to the coast. The beach stretches for approximately 7 km and offers relatively safe swimming conditions during the non-monsoon months.

Digha has been popular with Bengali and Jharkhand tourists for decades and has good tourist infrastructure — hotels in every budget range, seafood restaurants, beach shops, and boat rides.

Route from Jharkhand to Digha

**From Ranchi**: Approximately 500 km, 9-10 hours by bus via Jamshedpur and Kharagpur.

**From Dhanbad**: Approximately 380 km, 7-8 hours — one of the shortest routes from any major Jharkhand city to a beach destination.

**From Bokaro**: Approximately 420 km, 8 hours.

**From Jamshedpur**: Approximately 320 km, 6 hours — the closest major Jharkhand city to Digha.

The route from Jamshedpur and Dhanbad is particularly smooth and well-maintained, making it comfortable for group bus travel.

Nearby beaches — worth exploring

**Talsari**: 8 km from Digha in Odisha. A quieter and cleaner beach with a casuarina forest lining the shore. Ideal for groups wanting a more peaceful beach experience away from Digha's crowds.

**Mandarmani**: 35 km from Digha. One of the longest motorable beaches in India. Very popular with college groups for its open space and beach driving experience. Has several good beach resorts.

**Shankarpur**: 14 km from Digha. A small fishing village with a relatively uncrowded beach. The fishing harbour is interesting to visit early in the morning when the boats return with their catch.

**Tajpur**: 25 km from Digha. The most peaceful of the nearby beaches with virtually no commercial development. Best for nature-loving groups.

Best time to visit Digha

**October to March**: The best time. Weather is pleasant, the sea is calm, swimming is safe, and all beach activities are available. This is peak season.

**April to May**: Pre-monsoon heat. Hot and humid but the sea is still relatively calm. Avoid midday beach time — early morning and evening are pleasant.

**June to September (monsoon)**: Not recommended for beach holidays. The sea is rough and dangerous for swimming. Beaches are closed for water activities. Digha can flood during heavy rain.

Activities at Digha

**Sea bathing**: The main attraction. The beach has lifeguards during peak season and designated safe swimming zones. Groups should always swim within the designated areas.

**Boat rides**: Traditional fishing boats offer short rides along the coastline. Available from the beach at reasonable rates.

**Aquarium**: Digha has a small marine aquarium near the beach — good for school groups and families with children.

**Beach walks**: The 7 km stretch of beach is ideal for early morning and evening walks. The sunset view from New Digha is particularly beautiful.

**Local seafood**: Digha is famous for fresh seafood — particularly crab, prawns, and fish. The beach-side restaurants serve excellent Bengali fish curry and seafood dishes at very reasonable prices.

**Shopping**: The market near the beach sells shells, local handicrafts, and beach souvenirs. Good for group shopping after the beach.

Tips for group beach trips

Assign swimming supervisors for large groups — especially for school trips with young students. Keep non-swimmers away from the water.

Carry sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats — the sun on the beach is significantly stronger than in Jharkhand.

Book accommodation 2-3 weeks in advance for weekend visits — Digha gets very crowded on weekends and good rooms fill up fast.

Carry cash — while Digha has ATMs, they sometimes run out during peak season.

Keep valuables locked in the hotel — do not carry wallets and phones to the beach.
