Kanwar Yatra Bus Booking from Jharkhand — Sultanganj to Deoghar Guide

The Kanwar Yatra is one of the largest annual pilgrimages in India — and Jharkhand is one of the most significant states in this sacred tradition. Every year during Shravan month, millions of Kanwarias from Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, and beyond walk or travel the route from Sultanganj on the Ganga to Deoghar Baidyanath Dham, carrying holy Gangajal to offer to Lord Shiva. This guide covers everything groups from Jharkhand need to know about planning their Kanwar Yatra.

What is the Kanwar Yatra?

The Kanwar Yatra is a pilgrimage undertaken during the Hindu month of Shravan (July-August) in which devotees — called Kanwarias — carry a Kanwar (a bamboo pole with pots of holy Gangajal suspended at each end) from the Ganga to the nearest Shiva temple. The most significant Kanwar route in eastern India goes from Sultanganj on the Ganga in Bihar to Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar — a distance of approximately 105 km.

The Kanwarias wear saffron or orange clothes and chant "Bol Bam" — a salutation to Lord Shiva — throughout their journey. The Gangajal cannot touch the ground during the journey — it must be carried continuously until it is offered at the Jyotirlinga.

Sultanganj — where the journey begins

Sultanganj is a small town on the banks of the Ganga in Bhagalpur district, Bihar — approximately 180 km from Ranchi and 110 km from Dhanbad. It is the traditional starting point of the Deoghar Kanwar route because Sultanganj has a swiftly flowing stretch of the Ganga that is considered especially holy.

The Sultanganj ghat during Shravan is a magnificent sight — thousands of Kanwarias filling their pots in the river at all hours of the day and night. The Ajgaibinath Temple on a rocky island in the middle of the Ganga at Sultanganj is itself an important pilgrimage site.

For groups from Jharkhand, the complete Kanwar Yatra itinerary typically involves:

  • Day 1: Travel from Jharkhand to Sultanganj by bus, collect Gangajal, begin the Kanwar walk or travel
  • Day 2-3: Complete the 105 km route to Deoghar (on foot) or travel directly by bus
  • Day 3-4: Darshan at Baidyanath Dham and Basukinath, return to Jharkhand

The Kanwar route — walking vs. bus travel

**Walking the full route**: Traditional Kanwarias walk the 105 km from Sultanganj to Deoghar — a journey that takes 2-4 days depending on pace. The route passes through several towns and villages with designated rest areas (Kanwar Seva Shivirs) where food, water, and medical assistance are provided free of charge by local organisations.

**Bus travel**: Many devotees — particularly elderly pilgrims, families with children, and groups who cannot walk long distances — travel from Sultanganj to Deoghar by bus after collecting the Gangajal. This is a perfectly accepted form of the Kanwar Yatra for those unable to walk. The Gangajal is carried carefully on the bus.

**Combination**: Some groups walk a portion of the route — typically 10-20 km — and travel the remainder by bus. This allows participation in the spirit of the Kanwar Yatra while being practical for groups of mixed fitness levels.

Dandis and Dak Kanwarias

**Dandi Kanwaria**: The Kanwar is carried on the shoulder throughout, without resting on the ground. This is the standard form of the yatra.

**Dak Kanwaria**: A special vow in which the Kanwaria runs the entire route without stopping for sleep — completing the 105 km journey in one continuous effort. Dak Kanwarias are given priority darshan at Baidyanath Dham. This is an extremely demanding physical undertaking.

Important tips for group Kanwar Yatra

**Start early in Shravan**: The first week of Shravan is less crowded than the final weeks. Starting your yatra in the first 10 days of Shravan gives you a more manageable experience.

**Register your group**: There is no mandatory registration for Kanwar Yatra but keeping a list of all group members with contact numbers is important for safety in the large crowds.

**Maintain group discipline on the road**: The Kanwar route is heavily trafficked during Shravan. Vehicles must give way to Kanwarias on foot — if your group is travelling by bus, the driver must be patient and respectful.

**Medical preparedness**: Carry personal medicines for all group members. The route has first aid posts but they can be overwhelmed during peak days.

**Book accommodation in advance**: Both Sultanganj and Deoghar accommodation fills up completely during Shravan. Book 3-4 weeks in advance.
