Vaishno Devi Yatra from Jharkhand by Bus — Tips & Complete Booking Guide

Vaishno Devi is one of the most visited Hindu pilgrimage destinations in India, drawing over 8 million devotees every year to the Trikuta Mountains in Jammu. For groups from Jharkhand, travelling by bus is the most popular and practical way to make this journey — combining the devotional experience of a group pilgrimage with the comfort and flexibility of private transport.

This guide covers everything you need to know about planning a Vaishno Devi Yatra from Jharkhand.

About Vaishno Devi

The Vaishno Devi shrine is located in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, at an altitude of 5,200 feet. The temple is dedicated to Mata Vaishno Devi, who is considered a manifestation of the divine feminine. The shrine consists of three natural rock formations (pindis) representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati.

The trek to the shrine starts from Katra, the base camp town, which is well-connected by road from Jammu. The trek is approximately 14 km one way from Katra to the main Bhawan (shrine), passing through the Adhkwari checkpoint at the midpoint.

Route from Jharkhand to Vaishno Devi

The journey from Ranchi to Katra covers approximately 1,700 km and takes around 26–30 hours by bus, typically with an overnight halt at Jammu.

**Day 1**: Depart Ranchi in the evening. Travel overnight toward Jammu via Varanasi and Lucknow.

**Day 2**: Reach Jammu by morning or afternoon. Rest and freshen up. If you arrive early, you can visit Raghunath Temple or Bahu Fort in Jammu.

**Day 3**: Drive from Jammu to Katra (50 km, about 1.5 hours). Check in at your accommodation. Begin the trek in the afternoon or evening — many pilgrims prefer starting the trek at night to arrive at the Bhawan by early morning.

**Day 4**: Complete the trek to Vaishno Devi Bhawan. Take darshan (the wait time varies from 30 minutes to several hours depending on season). Begin descent back to Katra.

**Day 5**: Rest in Katra or Jammu. Begin the return journey to Jharkhand.

**Day 6–7**: Return to Ranchi.

The full trip including travel typically takes 7–8 days for a comfortable pace.

The trek — what to expect

The trek from Katra to Vaishno Devi Bhawan is well-maintained, well-lit, and manageable for people of reasonable fitness. However, it is a serious walk — 14 km uphill one way at altitude. Here is what to expect:

**Katra to Banganga** (2 km): The initial stretch passes through the town and is flat to gently uphill.

**Banganga to Adhkwari** (6 km): A steady uphill climb. This section has the famous Adhkwari shrine midway, where many pilgrims take a short rest.

**Adhkwari to Bhawan** (6 km): The final stretch includes some steeper sections. The Bhawan complex is large and includes the main shrine, prasad counters, and waiting areas.

For those unable to trek on foot, ponies, palkis (dolis), and helicopter services are available at multiple points along the route. Helicopter service runs from Katra directly to Sanjhi Chhat (near the Bhawan) and is the fastest option.

Yatra registration — mandatory for all pilgrims

All pilgrims must register for the Vaishno Devi Yatra before beginning the trek. Registration is managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. You can register:

  • Online at the official shrine board website (recommended for groups)
  • At registration counters in Katra on the day of your trek
  • At counters in Jammu city

For group travel, online advance registration is strongly recommended during peak seasons (March–April, July–August, October–November) as daily entry numbers are sometimes capped.

Each registered pilgrim receives a RFID card (Yatra Parchi) which is scanned at multiple checkpoints along the route.

Best time to visit

**March to May**: Pleasant weather, manageable crowds. The pre-summer period is ideal for most groups.

**July to August**: Peak season coinciding with Shravan month. Hugely popular but crowded. Expect longer waiting times at the shrine and at registration counters.

**October to November**: Post-monsoon season with clear skies and beautiful landscapes. One of the best times for the experience.

**December to February**: Cold and sometimes snowy. The trek becomes more challenging but the atmosphere is serene. Not recommended for elderly pilgrims or young children.

What to carry

  • Aadhaar card or valid photo ID (mandatory for every pilgrim)
  • Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes — not slippers or sandals
  • Warm layers — temperatures are significantly cooler than the plains, even in summer
  • Light rain jacket or poncho (weather can change quickly in the mountains)
  • Personal medicines and a small first aid kit
  • Dry snacks and a water bottle
  • Small torch or headlamp for night trekking
  • Cash (ATMs available in Katra but can run out during peak season)

Tips for group travel

Keep the group together, especially between the Adhkwari and Bhawan section where the path can be crowded. Designate a group leader who stays at the front and a sweep who stays at the rear.

Start the trek early in the morning or at night to avoid the midday heat and peak crowds at the shrine. The darshan queue moves faster between 2 AM and 6 AM.

Book accommodation in Katra well in advance for peak season visits. The town fills up quickly and last-minute bookings can be expensive or unavailable.
