Top 7 Pilgrimage Destinations in Jharkhand Reachable by Bus

Jharkhand holds a unique place in the spiritual geography of India. Nestled in the heart of the Chotanagpur Plateau, the state is home to some of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in eastern India — ancient Jyotirlingas, sacred Shakti Pithas, Jain tirthas, and riverside temples that draw millions of devotees every year.

Here are the seven most important pilgrimage destinations in Jharkhand, with practical travel information for group visits by bus.

1. Baidyanath Dham, Deoghar — The Jyotirlinga

Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar is unquestionably the most visited pilgrimage destination in Jharkhand and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. The main temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Vaidyanath (the lord who heals), is surrounded by 21 other temples in a single complex — making it one of the most dense concentrations of temples in India.

During the Shravan month (July–August), millions of Kanwariyas walk from Sultanganj (in Bihar, on the banks of the Ganga) carrying holy Gangajal water to offer at the Baidyanath temple. This is one of the largest annual pilgrimage gatherings in the world.

Distance from Ranchi: approximately 250 km. Journey time by bus: 4–5 hours.

Best time to visit: Year-round, but Shravan month is the most spiritually charged period. For a comfortable, less crowded visit, October to March is ideal.

2. Parasnath Hill (Shikharji), Giridih — The Jain Tirtha

Parasnath Hill, known to Jains as Shikharji, is the holiest pilgrimage site in the Jain faith and the tallest peak in Jharkhand at 1,350 metres. The hill is named after Parasnath, the 23rd Jain Tirthankara, who is believed to have attained nirvana here along with 20 other Tirthankaras.

The hilltop is home to 20 exquisitely built Jain temples, maintained by different Jain communities from across India. The temples showcase some of the finest examples of Jain temple architecture in eastern India. The circular trek around the hilltop passing all 20 temples is approximately 9 km.

The trek is manageable but steep in sections. Palanquin services are available for those unable to walk.

Distance from Ranchi: approximately 170 km. Journey time: 3–3.5 hours.

Best time to visit: October to March. The Jain pilgrimage peak is during Paryushana (August–September).

3. Rajrappa Dham, Ramgarh — The Shakti Pitha

Rajrappa is the most important Shakti Pitha in Jharkhand, dedicated to Maa Chhinnmasatika — a powerful and unusual form of the goddess. The temple sits at the confluence of the Damodar and Bhairavi rivers, creating a deeply atmospheric setting with the river on both sides and forested hills in the background.

The main temple is relatively small but holds immense religious significance. Animal sacrifice was historically practised here, though this has been significantly reduced in recent years. The natural setting of the temple — at the point where two rivers meet — is considered highly auspicious.

The site is well-developed for pilgrims with good amenities, parking, and approach roads. It is one of the most accessible major pilgrimage destinations from Ranchi.

Distance from Ranchi: approximately 80 km. Journey time: 1.5–2 hours.

Best time to visit: Year-round. Navratri (twice a year) is the most celebrated period.

4. Deori Temple, Tamar

Located in the scenic hills near Tamar in Ranchi district, Deori Temple is a significant Shakti temple dedicated to Maa Deori. The temple is perched on a hill and requires a climb, but the views from the top are spectacular. It is particularly popular with local devotees and is less crowded than Rajrappa, making it suitable for groups seeking a more peaceful pilgrimage experience.

Distance from Ranchi: approximately 60 km. Journey time: 1.5 hours.

5. Itkhori, Chatra — Multi-faith Pilgrimage Site

Itkhori is a remarkable multi-faith pilgrimage site in Chatra district that holds significance for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains simultaneously. The site contains the ancient Bhairav Nath Temple, Buddhist stupas, and Jain sculptures, all in close proximity. This historical coexistence of three faiths makes it a uniquely educational pilgrimage destination as well as a spiritually significant one.

The site is located in a forested area and has a wild, ancient atmosphere that many pilgrims find particularly moving.

Distance from Ranchi: approximately 120 km. Journey time: 2.5 hours.

6. Maluti, Dumka — The Temple Village

Maluti in Dumka district is sometimes called the village of temples — it contains over 72 terracotta temples built between the 16th and 18th centuries, representing one of the finest concentrations of terracotta temple architecture in India. Most of the temples are dedicated to Shiva and are built in the Bengal terracotta style with exquisite panels depicting scenes from Hindu mythology.

Maluti is a heritage pilgrimage destination that combines religious significance with extraordinary architectural history. It is ideal for groups interested in culture, history, and religious art.

Distance from Ranchi: approximately 290 km. Journey time: 5–6 hours. Best visited as an overnight trip.

7. Basukinath Temple, Dumka — Companion Dham to Deoghar

Basukinath is considered one of the most important companion temples to Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is located in Dumka district and is part of the traditional Deoghar-Basukinath pilgrimage circuit. Many devotees visit both temples in a single trip. The temple complex is well-maintained and draws large crowds during Shravan.

Distance from Ranchi: approximately 230 km. Distance from Deoghar: approximately 42 km.
